Walleye Opener 2012

The fishing this past weekend was relatively good, especially considering it is still only May.   I was out two different days and both days we landed 30 or more walleye.   For the most part, wherever we marked fish on the locator, they would bite.   Many of the walleye were in the 12-15 inch range, but we did manage to get one approx. 23 inches.   The bigger fish seemed to be a little deeper, but I believe in the next couple weeks, they will move shallow and begin a post-spawn feeding frenzy!
Lake trout have been steady, some fisherman are getting them in 40 feet of water near the bottom, while others have caught a few nice fish in less than 20 feet of water, and one of our guests even caught some in 50 foot of water basically trolling near the top!
The big smallies have moved shallow in all the area lakes and are currently establishing their bedding areas.   They are not chasing yet, but will readily take a lure near or in their bed.   It looks like the spawn should occur about mid June this year.
Pike are biting like pike should.   Numerous pike from 30-40 inches have been caught and released by our fisherman this past week.  I would guess the bigger pike will be shallow throughout a good part of June, then will be deep the rest of the summer.
Surface temps are currently running around 58 degrees on most area lakes, with some of the bays topping out at 62.
The open water season has officially begun!!!
Travel safely and good fishing!
Jody
